Carers Conversation FAQs

The Carers Grants Project provides financial support to unpaid carers for essential items or services that improve wellbeing and make caring easier. Grants are funded by local and national charitable organisations.

What is a Carers Conversation?

A Carers Conversation (known nationally as a Carers Assessment) is a discussion focused on your caring role and how it impacts your life. It aims to identify the support and advice you may need as a carer.
Adults caring for another adult are eligible for a Carers Conversation under the Care Act 2014, which ensures carers’ needs are recognised and supported.

Who is eligible for a Carers Conversation?

  • Adults who care for another adult.

  • You are eligible for one Carers Conversation or Review per year.

Which local authority is responsible?

The local authority where the person you care for lives is responsible for arranging your Carers Conversation.

Who carries out the Carers Conversation?

If you are already known to Adult Social Care, they may carry out the Carers Conversation. If not, Camden Carers can support you.
Camden Carers is commissioned by Camden Council to offer Carers Conversations.

How do I get referred for a Carers Conversation?

Contact Camden Carers by phone on 0207 4288950 or email referrals@camdencarers.org.uk to refer yourself.

The referral process includes an eligibility check to see whether Camden Carers or Adult Social Care (ASC) is responsible for your appointment.

If ASC is responsible, Camden Carers will refer you to them. If Camden Carers is responsible, you will be added to our waiting list.

How long will I wait for an appointment and outcome?

  • Appointment wait times can vary from 4 to 12 weeks, depending on demand.

  • After your appointment, the wait for an outcome can be up to 16 weeks.

How often can I apply?

Carers can access a grant for one item, once every 6–12 months (conditions apply).

What outcomes can I expect?

  • Information, support, and advice tailored to your needs.

  • Referrals for additional support, such as counselling or financial advice.

  • In some cases, funding may be provided to support your wellbeing (e.g., respite breaks, gym membership, massages).

How is my information stored?
